Ice Bear Thermal Energy Storage Program

Glendale Water & Power (GWP) is pleased to be part of the nation’s first cost-effective, utility-scale, distributed energy storage project. This project, along with our other Smart Grid projects, will help GWP to continue to deliver reliable, competitively priced electric service in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.

The Ice Bear reduces the energy you use to cool your building during peak (afternoon) periods. Glendale Water & Power (GWP) is pleased to offer this technology at no cost to building owners. This technology works with your existing air conditioner and will reduce the energy to cool buildings by 5% or more over the life of the unit.

Additional benefits of this technology will allow us to reduce the use of carbon fuels while at the same time cutting greenhouse gas emissions. It will also provide cooler air to your building than traditional air conditioners. This will help your tenants control their cost and improve the environment they work in. The program is free to qualifying building owners.

How it works:

The Ice Bear is a proven piece of equipment similar in size and appearance to your building’s existing HVAC system. When connected to your building HVAC system, it creates and stores ice at night and efficiently delivers that cooling the next day using the same duct work and fan your current HVAC system uses. Your building is cooled exactly as before but without running your HVAC system’s energy-hogging compressor during expensive and environmentally damaging peak daytime hours.

If your building qualifies, GWP will provide your building the use of one or more Ice Bear units, completely free of charge, including installation and maintenance by GWP. There are no changes to your existing ductwork or structure, and no inconvenience to your customers, tenants or employees.
