Also honor Congressman Adam Schiff for his support of GWP Projects

GLENDALE, California – Glendale Water & Power (GWP) has invited dignitaries and community leaders to help mark a year of unprecedented accomplishments for the utility and to also honor Congressman Adam Schiff for his work in securing federal support for these projects. The event will take place on Thursday, June 3rd, from 2-4 pm. at the Brand Library Recital Hall 1601 Mountain Boulevard. The media and the public are invited to attend.

The June 3rd event will focus on the three major accomplishments for this year including:

  • Glendale Water & Power was the first utility in the nation to execute a contract with the Department of Energy for an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Smart Grid grant in the amount of $20M. The receipt of this grant provides a significant portion of the $70M cost of the City-wide Smart Grid project. Smart Meters support GWP’s move toward a more efficient and reliable Smart Grid that will enable Glendale to remain a leader in green energy and environmental sustainability. Congressman Adam Schiff’s office wrote letters of support for GWP to secure this grant.
  • Congressman Adam Schiff’s office was instrumental in contributing over $1.2 million to help fund GWP’s new construction of Chromium 6 state-of-the-art facilities which are the only ones in the nation of their kind. The facilities test, treat and remove traces of chromium 6 from water. This project will benefit cities and water agencies across the nation that have chromium 6 in their water supplies.
  • The Verdugo Power Academy is the newest partnership GWP has with Glendale Community College. With the support of Congressman Adam Schiff’s office both the utility and the college have established a new training program for people interested in working in the power industry. The program is intended to raise awareness and interest in careers in utilities, and to focus on training workforce from the local community.

“I can’t say enough about Congressman Schiff’s support for these and other projects,” says Glenn Steiger, GWP General Manager. “Glendale Water & Power is leading the nation as one of the first utilities taking on such projects that focus on new and innovative technologies and techniques that will set an example for other utilities to follow. The last 100 years GWP has provided unparalleled reliable service to our customers, and we are now setting the pace for the next 100 years in becoming a more efficient utility, using smarter technology and providing jobs for the future.”
