Residents Reminded to Stick to 3-day a Week Watering

GLENDALE, California – Glendale Water & Power reminds customers that the City of Glendale is still in Phase II of the City’s water conservation ordinance. The City in the summer of 2009 implemented mandatory water conservation.

With ongoing water shortage looming over California, Glendale Water & Power has joined forces again with the cities of Pasadena and Burbank and the Crescenta Valley Water District to help spread the same three day a week watering message. Watering landscapes is still restricted to three days a week: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for 10 minutes at each watering station, between the hours of 6 p.m. and 9 a.m.

GWP has been urging customers to voluntarily conserve water since June 2008. In August 2009, Glendale City Council declared mandatory water conservation. These efforts resulted in an 18 percent drop in consumption. With the wet winter and cooler temperatures behind us, GWP is seeing a drop in conservation efforts and is reminding customers that California is still facing a severe water shortage and customers need to step up their conservation efforts.

“As we start entering the warmer months, we are seeing customers using more water,” stated Glenn Steiger, General Manager of GWP. “We are reminding our customers that we are still in mandatory conservation and that means only watering our yards three days a week. Three day watering is sufficient and will help us maintain our water reserves,”

Glendale will continue to step up its water conservation message again this summer and is now providing customers a free informational brochure filled with indoor and outdoor water conservation tips. Customers can call the utility at (818) 548-3300 and request the brochures or download it from the GWP website. GWP is also urging apartment building owners to call for additional copies to share with tenants. Customers can still anonymously report water waste by calling (818) 550-4426, or report it online www.GlendaleWaterAndPower.com

The Metropolitan Water District of CA, where Glendale purchases 60% of its water, is also running various radio and television spots to educate customers on California’s water crisis and outdated water system and to urge them to continue conserving.
