Caller Impersonates a Power Employee

Atineh N. Haroutunian
7/20/2009

GLENDALE, California – Glendale Water & Power (GWP) officials want to inform the public that an anonymous person claiming to be a Power employee called a customer and stated their payment for their utility bill did not go through and if they did not pay over the phone with a credit card their service would be disconnected. They also left a false toll-free phone number to call to verify payment went through.  Although the impersonator never identified themselves as a Glendale Water and Power employee, the victim assumed that it was legitimate call and provided credit card information.  Not until after trying to verify the payment, did the victim learn of fraudulent charges to her credit card.

Glendale Water & Power would like the public to know that we never ask for payment over the phone. If it is a matter of service disconnection, GWP sends out a final disconnection notice in the mail that your bill is due, and ask that you that you either contact GWP customer service by phone or come in to pay your bill. GWP officials have reported the incident to the Glendale Police Department and the case is under investigation.

If you feel that you have been a victim of this scheme, please confirm with our Customer Service Department on the status of your account and call your credit card company immediately to determine if there is any fraudulent activity.   Report the incident to the Glendale Police Department at (818) 548-4840.
